Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine was a very appropriate movie for this month. The movie is set in New York, during Valentines day. It had romance and comedy, but also a very interesting concept where you could have specific memories erased.

The movie presents a question. Would you erase a relationship from your memory to ease the pain, or is it important to remember both the good and bad to learn from your mistakes? Jim Carey and Kate Winslet play Joel and Clementine, the characters in pursuit of this question. Jim Carey portrays his character very well, but don't expect to see his slapstick comedy. This is a serious role for him, and he nails it. Overall the camera work is very good, some of the scenes are very beautiful and artistic. One such scene is when Joel and Clementine are laying on a frozen lake, there is a very unique crack in the ice that frames them and makes the shot interesting. Much of the movie is from the perspective of Joel in his own mind. Joel's memories of his relationship with Clementine are being erased, and he is running away from the erasing procedure. Old fashioned camera tricks are used to show his mind being erased and it's amazing there are very little CG effects used. Overall this is a satisfying movie, the acting is good, the soundtrack is good, and it really makes you think. This movie can be funny at times, but also very sad. It teaches that you can erase someone from your mind, but getting them out of your heart is different story.
